| A conference designed for you.
The 2010 Credit Union Forum will be held in Memphis on April 27. The Forum will address several unique issues brought on by the last two years' unprecedented events.
Many credit unions are happy to look at 2009 in the rear view mirror. The one-time Share Insurance Fund stabilization expense hit last year's income statement and followed a difficult 2008. This year is off to a positive start with credit unions enjoying strong share growth and an overall uptick in net interest margins. Challenges to address for 2010 include the following:
- Managing interest rate risk in a low rate environment with an eye toward rising rates
- Investing funds created by share growth exceeding loan demand
- Minimizing liquidity with low short-term rates.
The Forum is hosted by Vining Sparks, a leading provider of investment products and services to credit unions. The program has been specifically designed for credit unions and the unique challenges presented by today's financial environment. A travel incentive of $200 will be provided to each credit union that attends. We look forward to seeing you at the 2010 Credit Union Forum.

FORUM Topics
Economic Outlook and the Fed’s Current Strategy
This session will provide insight into the current status of the U.S. and world economy by reviewing historical data, recent Fed officials’ comments and FOMC actions, and current technical indicators.
Portfolio Management in a Low Rate Environment
Credit union investment portfolios have grown dramatically over the last two years as the increase in shares and deposits has exceeded loan growth. This presents a major challenge as these new funds must be invested in a historically low rate environment. This session will discuss lessons learned from the past and provide guidelines for investing during low rates with an eye toward rising rates.
Product Updates and Trends
This section will begin with a quick overview of all eligible investment alternatives and their current returns. We will utilize an “Investment Alternatives Matrix” to illustrate the range of yields and price volatility measures available to investors. This will lead to detailed discussions on a variety of products:
- Agency Securities
- Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBSs)
- Adjustable Rate MBSs (ARMs)
- Collateralized Mortgage Obligations (CMOs)
- Small Business Administration Guaranteed Loan Pool Certificates (SBA GLPCs)
ALCO Strategies for the Current Environment
The NCUA has been proactive in reminding credit unions that they must have sound management practices in place to measure, monitor and control interest rate risk. This session will identify key short and long-term moves credit unions should consider to reduce interest rate risk and maximize earnings in today’s low rate environment.
Liquidity & Funding Best Practices
Liquidity management has become a hot issue and key profitability concern with overnight rates at all time lows. This session will provide tips on liquidity management, enhancing and growing core funding sources, utilizing wholesale sources, and regulatory expectations.
High Performing Portfolios
Top performing portfolios do not just focus on meeting one objective, they achieve success in many areas. This session will dissect high performing portfolios and identify characteristics that significantly enhance income. You will also learn the strategic steps currently being implemented by your peers with higher yielding portfolios.
